What To Expect
Free Phone Consultation
First we'll schedule a brief, free phone consultation. You'll tell me a little about what's going on, and I'll tell you a little about me. We'll go over some basics like insurance, fees, and scheduling. If it's a good fit for both of us, we'll move forward with scheduling your first appointment.
Client Portal
I use Sessions Health as an electronic health record with a client portal. After our phone consult, you'll receive a link to your client portal. You'll have a bunch of paperwork to review and sign - please read carefully and shoot me an email with any questions. All of this paperwork must be completed prior to our first appointment. You'll receive a telehealth link or directions to the office when your paperwork is complete. Sessions Health will also send you text and email reminders of your appointments.
Your First Appointment
You first appointment will be an initial assessment. It will be a little different from a typical session, as I'll be asking a lot of questions and taking notes on my computer. I really want to know as much as you're comfortable sharing to give me context and get to know who you are, what you've been through, who's and what is important to you. It's also okay if there are things you're not ready to talk about yet - you let me know. It's normal to feel nervous at this first appointment (and sometimes even going forward).
Going Forward
Typically we'll start with weekly appointments. It takes time to build any relationship. Sessions are typically 45-55 minutes; this may depend on your insurance. Please be on time. As you start successfully learning some new ways to move forward through life, we'll discuss together when you're ready to decrease the frequency of our meetings. Dress however you are most comfortable. If we are meeting through telehealth, it's best to find a quiet, private space, with a stable internet connection. No matter how we meet, it is normal to laugh, cry, be nervous, talk a little, or talk a lot. I'm here to support you through all of that. We all want therapy to help us feel better, but the truth is, sometimes in the moment, being open and vulnerable can make things feel worse for a little bit.  Be patient and kind with yourself - this is hard work that takes time.
